Jacob, Design Engineer

First name:  Jacob

Time at EDAG / year hired: 2019

Title: Design Engineer

How did you come to work at EDAG / why did you start down an engineering career path?

I graduated college December 2018 and was fortunate enough to be contacted by a recruiter that was working at EDAG. This enabled me to start working here at the beginning of January 2019. I have always been interested in designing and creating new things. When I started college I took an Intro to Engineering class that introduced me to all the different types of engineering. Design engineering stuck out to me the most and I started on that career path right away.

What do you like most about working at EDAG?

Working at EDAG has been a great learning experience for me. I have been able to work on projects that have allowed me to use Catia V5 and V6, Solidworks, and NX. This has given me a chance to really learn other CAD software that I was not taught during school. I know that people you work with can really make or break a job and EDAG has all very educated and nice people working here. This makes the job more enjoyable to be at. With EDAG being a global company, I am also able to work with people from all around the world, which has been awesome!

What does a typical work day look like for you?

A typical work day at EDAG for me is mainly working on CAD every day. The CAD work varies depending on where I am at in a project. Being a designer, I am assigned a project and put on a team with other designers with a lead engineer. As a team we have internal meetings distributing work to one another or discussing current work. We also will have meetings with our customer of the project reviewing designs and the customer specifications/wants for the product. When I have work assigned to me I will use a variety of methods to get to the final design including surfacing, solid modeling, sheet metal design, and drafting. Depending on the project I will be using Catia V5 or V6, NX, or Solidworks for the software. Our team also works with manufacturing suppliers to determine what is able to be manufactured and what needs to change. Periodically, our team will work with CAE to determine the weak areas of the design that need improving. When the final design is ready, our team will create drawings of the design for manufacturing to produce.

What are some of your hobbies / what do you do outside of work?

I enjoy a lot of different hobbies outside of work. Beginning with art, I am a big fan of creating things that get a reaction out of people. This can be through painting, drawing, wood work, sculpting, computer graphics, anything that deals with exploring my imagination. I purchased my own house after starting work at EDAG and redesigning my home has been a huge time consuming hobby of mine. I like to use the term “bio hacking” when describing the redesign I am doing to my home. I really enjoy feeling healthy, so, lifting weights and playing sports are a huge part of my life. I am a big fan of adventure/exploring. Traveling to new places is one of my most favorite things to do. I love hiking in the woods, mountains, beaches, cities, or anywhere new to me. I am obsessed with music, I am constantly listening to music and finding new genres. Music has given me a great opportunity to explore new places. There are music and art festivals all around the world these days and when I have extra time, I try to go them. They are my absolute favorite because they are a combination of my favorite things, art, adventure, and music. Lastly, I love messing around with producing software and mixing music.
