ADVANCED CLEAN TRANSPORTATION EXPO 2021

The Advanced Clean Transportation Expo was held August 30-September 2 in Long Beach, California, USA. This year’s show was one of the first major in-person industry shows post-pandemic, complete with proof-of-vaccination or negative COVID test requirements, and 100% masking. Still, hundreds of displays and thousands of participants attest to the Expo’s success. In attendance for EDAG: Kai Salzmann (US CEO) and Roger Baywol (US Business Development Director).

Alternative fuels such as propane or CNG, once a staple at the show, continue to decline in presence, displaced first by battery electric vehicles and, at this year’s Expo, an abundance of hydrogen-fueled alternatives. Fuel cell and hydrogen tank displays were almost as numerous as the hand sanitizer stations. Whether powered by batteries or fuel cells, electric vehicles are an easy business case sell to a commercial vehicle’s bottom line, with paybacks in the 5-7 year range for many high-use situations.

One of the stars of the show was the Nikola TRE battery-electric Class 8 semi tractor. Displayed prominently in their booth, the Nikola leadership team expressed their appreciation for EDAG’s role in integrating their electric powertrain technology into the base Iveco cabover truck. Unlike the alpha- or beta-level vehicles shown in many other booths, the TRE is production-ready. There was always a crowd in the Nikola booth…..who knows how many potential TRE sales were made?

Other great discussions occurred at the Expo with numerous current and potential electric delivery vehicle and heavy truck clients. EDAG has the experience to help commercial vehicle OEM’s and suppliers integrate new technologies into their product portfolios by applying just the right amount of our product development processes learned from the automotive industry. Whether on our site or our client’s, EDAG team members can become a valuable extension of the OEM or Tier Supplier Product Team.

The ACT Expo returns to Long Beach in Spring, 2022.
